This course provides a foundational understanding of Afro-textured hair from a structural, chemical, and professional perspective.

Students will learn how hair functions, how different hair types behave, and how to make informed decisions when caring for textured hair. The focus is on building clarity, not guesswork—so every technique applied moving forward is based on proper knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the structure of the hair strand and its components (cuticle, cortex, medulla)
  • Identify and classify hair types within the textured hair spectrum (Types 2–4, including 4A–4C)
  • Assess porosity, density, elasticity, and shrinkage
  • Understand how products interact with hair, including moisture retention and pH balance
  • Recognize common scalp conditions and hair loss disorders
  • Explain different forms of alopecia and contributing factors
  • Apply foundational principles of moisture balance and damage prevention
  • Understand basic hair chemistry, including keratin structure and bonding
  • Approach client concerns with professionalism and informed judgment

Hair Structure and Growth

  • Hair follicle, bulb, root, and shaft
  • Growth cycle: anagen, catagen, telogen

Hair Chemistry and Composition

  • Keratin, amino acids, and protein structure
  • Hydrogen, salt, and disulfide bonds
  • Effects of heat and chemical processes

Hair Types and Texture Classification

  • Type 2, 3, and 4 hair systems
  • Curl patterns and shrinkage

Porosity, Moisture, and Product Interaction

  • Moisture absorption and retention
  • Hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties
  • Product performance and pH balance

Afro-Textured Hair Characteristics

  • Dryness and reduced sebum distribution
  • Breakage, tangling, and fragility

Hair and Scalp Health

  • Common scalp conditions including dandruff, psoriasis, and folliculitis
  • Scalp care best practices

Hair Loss and Alopecia
